Challenge

The City of Flint, Michigan is renovating an existing fire station to serve as a new meeting and training facility for the fire department while also developing a new police shooting range with classroom space and a prefabricated metal storage building. The project requires mechanical system designs that support new building functions, updated layouts, and modern performance requirements. To move the project into construction through a public procurement process, the City needs comprehensive HVAC and plumbing bidding documents that address both renovated and new facilities.

Solution

Valdes Architecture & Engineering is providing HVAC and plumbing design services and preparing bidding documents for the renovated fire station and the classroom portion of the new police shooting range. The team is also developing ventilation and heating bidding documents for the new prefabricated storage building.

For HVAC systems, Valdes is designing modifications to existing systems where feasible to support new building uses and layouts, while developing new system designs where existing infrastructure cannot be adapted. Load calculations are being performed to determine heating and cooling requirements, followed by equipment selection for heating, cooling, ventilation, and related systems. The team is preparing complete bidding documents, including plans, details, sections, diagrams, schedules, and MasterSpec mechanical specifications.

For plumbing systems, Valdes is evaluating existing infrastructure and designing modifications or replacements as needed. This includes reviewing building loads to assess the impact of proposed renovations, determining water and sanitary load requirements for both the renovated fire station and the new shooting range, coordinating with the civil engineering consultant, and selecting equipment and fixtures. Detailed plumbing bidding documents and MasterSpec specifications are also being prepared.

Through these design services, the City of Flint will be equipped with comprehensive mechanical bidding documents that support a competitive public bidding process and efficient project delivery. The upgraded fire station training facility, new shooting range classroom spaces, and supporting storage building will provide modern, functional environments that enhance training capabilities and operational readiness for the City’s fire and police departments.
