Industrial Building Structural Inspection

Challenge

An industrial client had a nearly 100-year-old steel frame building with concrete floor slabs on its campus that was exhibiting signs of deterioration and needed recommendations for its repair.

Solution

Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) performed a structural condition assessment of the building. Valdes engineers reviewed the interior of the building floor by floor to document structural deficiencies and damage to the existing steel and concrete floors from water infiltration and deterioration. Valdes prepared a report summarizing our observations and recommendations which included prioritized action items for repairs. Valdes utilized non-destructive examination and testing methods to determine the extent of material deterioration present on the steel. Concrete cores were also taken to observe the condition of the concrete and rebar.

Impact

The report that Valdes created categorized the severity of damage and deterioration observed in the building. By providing the client with a categorized listing of the examination findings ranked by significance, the client was able to schedule engineering and repairs for the most severe items first and defer capital expenditures on items of a lesser significance.
