Des Plaines Bridge Rehabilitation

Challenge

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA) required construction inspection services to rehabilitate the Des Plaines River Bridge along the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway (I-90) to improve reliability for Tollway users.

Solution

A Valdes team member was the senior project manager and resident engineer who provided construction inspection services for this project. The project consisted of pavement removal and new concrete slabs, Toll Plaza 19 island modifications, superstructure replacement of the eastbound bridge, rehabilitating expansion joints on I-90 eastbound over Des Plaines River Road, making miscellaneous repairs, and rehabilitating I-190 westbound over eastbound I-90, including repairing steel girder connections and beams and painting the bridge, as well as the construction of drainage, erosion control, and landscaping features. The installation of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) camera and data collection pole, including a new power feed for traffic maintenance, was also a project component.

Impact

The project was successfully completed through extensive coordination with ISTHA and local municipalities. The Valdes team member demonstrated strong project ownership and handled client relations and project execution independently from corporate management. This successful execution was recognized with an American Council of Engineering Award (ACEC), further validating the team's capabilities and the project's quality.
