Heating Plant Design Build

Challenge

NIU West heating plant

A public sector higher education client needed to renovate and add on to their already existing heating plant to provide a reliable, economical, and sustainable central heating facility for its campus. The client also needed the new construction to be delivered using the design-build method.

Solution

Valdes partnered with other engineering firms utilizing previously prepared bridging documents to generate construction documents for the contractor. Since the heating plant was operational, these documents needed to deliver a phased implementation of new boilers and related equipment. They also needed to include various improvements and connections to existing campus infrastructure as well as consideration for LEED Silver certification.

Impact

Valdes worked with its partners to deliver a design that responded to the client’s current and future needs. Major design features include the following elements: Demolition/modification of existing buildings to accommodate new construction. New office, training/conference, and locker room facilities New addition to the existing West Plant Two new 75,000 pph boilers Interconnection between East and West Plants Substation modifications Combined heat and power planning for future installation
