Challenge

Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) was retained as a subconsultant to provide structural bridge inspection services for multiple bridge structures along Lake Shore Drive. The work focused on evaluating the condition of the underside of the intermediate bridge decks and parapet walls in an active, high-traffic urban environment.

Solution

Valdes served as the structural inspection consultant and coordinated field inspection operations with construction crews. Our engineers performed detailed visual examinations and hammer sounding of the concrete soffits and parapet walls using lifts, with maintenance of traffic in place.

A key component of the assignment was close, real-time coordination between Valdes inspectors and the contractor’s removal crews. As delaminated areas were identified, our team marked the locations directly on the underside of the bridge deck and parapet walls to clearly guide removal operations. This approach allowed loose concrete to be safely removed promptly following inspection, reducing the risk of falling debris and improving overall site safety.

Impact

Despite the challenges associated with night work, overhead inspections, and operating in a dense urban setting, Valdes successfully delivered accurate, actionable inspection services that supported immediate hazard mitigation and informed ongoing maintenance efforts.
