Challenge

A client in the steel industry announced its intention to build an electric arc furnace steelmaking facility onsite. Once the new furnace is completed, the facility will be capable of producing 1.5 million metric tons of steel slabs for the hot strip mill and producing a broad spectrum of steel grades required of the clients’ end-user markets. However, now that the project is under construction numerous gaps in engineering have been discovered within the designs provided.

Solution

Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) is working alongside our client to identify and resolve the engineering issues ahead of construction efforts. In addition to the gaps in engineering, there have been dimensional errors, interferences and clashes identified along the way. The extent of the engineering issues are unknown at this time as Valdes continues to review the existing designs. Valdes’ initial efforts will be focused on piping with the anticipation of supporting electrical, instrumentation and controls (EI&C). As progress is made, Valdes is capable of supporting from a construction administration perspective as well.

Impact

The Valdes team is making certain the construction of our client’s project is a success by preemptively identifying failures in the project design and correcting them before construction, mitigating potential setbacks in schedule and budget.
