Site Bulk Material Handling – Coal Pile #3 Decommissioning

Challenge

In preparation for the construction of a liquid natural gas plant on the current site of their Site Bulk Material Handling (SBMH) Coal Pile #3, a utility client needed to plan for its decommissioning. SBMH Coal Pile #3 will be decommissioned by the end of 2024 to allow demolition to begin in January 2025.

Solution

Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) developed the initial scope of the project and obtained capital project budget approval. Valdes has identified and is executing projects to modify all interdependent systems that are required to ensure that the remaining assets at the plant are not affected by the decommissioning. Valdes has assembled a project team consisting of plant personnel, corporate personnel, and third-party vendors to support the decommissioning effort. The project team has developed a plan to deplete the coal inventory and isolate the coal handling systems in preparation for the site's demolition. The plan also considers all environmental, financial, and legal requirements associated with decommissioning the coal pile. Valdes is developing and controlling the budget and schedule for the project as well as providing engineering support as required.

Impact

Valdes is actively developing managing and monitoring budgets, schedules, and work packages to ensure all the client objectives are satisfied. Valdes is the sole point of contact and accountability for all aspects of the decommissioning.
