Challenge

A refining client wanted to inspect the conditions of two stacks on site prior to a turnaround to determine if there would be a need to add unplanned scope. The stacks were over 200 feet tall and operating.

Solution

A Valdes survey crew visited the site equipped with a UAS and completed the following steps: - Wrote and discussed a flight plan with all necessary staff to cover all safety and operational challenges - Conducted two separate flights for each stack to collect image/video of key components - Downloaded the results and delivered to the client

Impact

Valdes’ efforts resulted in a fast, safe and cost-effective approach for collecting the requested information. Using UAS removed the need to put workers in unsafe conditions, eliminated the need to erect scaffolding, and allowed the equipment to remain in operation during the inspection. The use of high-resolution cameras provided clear imagery immediately available after capture which assisted in scope clarification.
