Crawford Honors College Design
Challenge

An alumnus of Joliet Junior College was interested in building space for a program designated as the Dr. Curtis J. and Mrs. Gina Crawford Honors College. The Crawford Honors College seeks to admit high performing candidates and provides a challenging curriculum for these students. It was important to the donor that the honors college have a distinctive identity on campus.
Solution
The Crawford Honors College was constructed by repurposing space in the existing library of the campus’ Building A. Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) provided architectural design for the Crawford Honors College, which consists of approximately 3,000 sf. Included in the space is a transparent entryway, reception area, coordinator’s office, two study rooms, a break room, and a classroom with computers. Valdes also designed graphics and signage that identifies the Crawford Honors College space was also included. Additionally, design work was done for a prayer room and a study room, which were originally located where the honors college now stands and needed to be relocated elsewhere in the library.
Impact
Valdes delivered the design envisioned by the alumnus donor for the new Crawford Honors College space and provided additional architecture, HVAC and electrical design for the two spaces that needed to be relocated.
