Vehicle Storage & Maintenance Facility
Challenge

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Woodstock Team Section Headquarters in McHenry County needs a new Vehicle Maintenance and Vehicle Storage Facility for their vehicle fleet. Currently, the site has several 1950s vintage structures that are inadequate for operations as IDOT currently conducts them. Two structures, the Maintenance Storage Building, which is a 6,048 sf structure and the Material Storage Building, a 2,880 square foot, one-story building, are to be demolished to allow space for the new facility.
Solution
Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) is in the process of designing a new drive-through maintenance facility which will include offices, a break room, two mechanics’ bays, a wash bay, a parts room, space to store approximately 22 heavy trucks and space to store approximately two off-road equipment vehicles. Valdes is currently working with the IDOT staff in the conceptual design phase to determine the configuration of the new building. Prior to the conceptual design phase, Valdes planners worked with IDOT staff to document the required spaces and required space sizes to be included in the building.
Impact
The conceptual design serves as a reference for initial approval processes, such as zoning reviews or permitting, as it demonstrates the project's feasibility and its alignment with client requirements.
