Water Main Construction Management & Inspection

Challenge

Water Main Construction

The project entailed the installation of water mains on streets in two different cities. The mains ranged from 12-inch to 16-inch, using HDPE or ductile iron pipe material, and utilized the installation methods of horizontal directional drilling as well as open-cut depending on location. These replacement projects were necessary to abandon the water mains that had exceeded their design life and mitigate future main repairs.

Solution

Staff at Valdes Architecture & Engineering completed inspection and construction management of three water main replacements. Key project elements included: inspection of three water main replacement construction projects; verification of client specifications and standards, including main testing; coordination with contractor, client, and residents; daily and weekly report documentation; record card documentation of water main components; GPS data collection of all installation data; quantity tracking; and construction management and resident project representative

Impact

Coordination between the contractor, client, and residents was crucial to the success of this project. The pressure testing, chlorination, dechlorination testing was required prior to service transfers taking place. Restoration after completed installation was observed for client and resident satisfaction in all ground disturbing locations.
