Lane Configuration

Challenge

The Village of Warrenville, a western suburb of Chicago, needed to reroute traffic in and out of a large shopping center on Diehl Road, a principal road through the Village, to address traffic concerns and improve safety for drivers.

Solution

A Valdes team member contributed valuable civil engineering experience to redesign the Diehl Road median between Winfield Road and Davis Parkway to allow for left only access to the shopping center. The project reconfigured the turning lanes and added additional storage bays on heavily trafficked Diehl Road while redesigning the mall entrance with clear ingress and egress indicated by guiding islands, as well as the accompanying ADA compliant sidewalks and ramps. A detailed striping plan was designed to reconfigure lanes, provide for multiple turning bays, island areas and walkway areas. The project included a topographical survey, engineered site design, and contract documents to bid and execute construction of the improvements.

Impact

A traffic control plan and specification book and bidding documents were prepared in accordance with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) standards to prepare the project for construction bidding. The project was funded through both state and local funds.
