Utility Power Plant – Fan Replacement Study

Challenge

A utility client contracted Valdes Architecture & Engineering (Valdes) to perform an engineering scoping study for the replacement of the forced draft and induced draft fans for all operating units at their plant. Replacement of this equipment was driven by the age and increasing maintenance costs to keep the existing fans operational.

Solution

Valdes determined the study scope boundaries based on information gathered from plant personnel as well as a review of the maintenance records for the associated equipment and ductwork. Valdes investigated the execution of full equipment replacements as well as partial replacements. Budgetary total installed cost estimates, including vendor equipment quotes, were developed for each option as stand-alone projects. Preliminary project schedules for each project scope were developed as well as an overall schedule staging the projects over multiple years. A comprehensive report documenting the proposed execution plan was prepared and submitted to the client.

Impact

Valdes analyzed the replacement of all operating fans at the plant to develop the strategy for the scope, budget, and timing of the replacement of each piece of equipment. The client was able to use this study to finalize their capital five-year plan.
